What do I need to bring for my first class?

Bring a water bottle, easy on/off shoes (e.g., flip-flops) to avoid walking barefoot off the mat, and clean undergarments to wear beneath the Gi (spandex, leggings, sports bra, etc.) and most importantly mindset to have fun!

Will I spare or "roll" with others, and if so, I won't I just end up getting smashed as a beginner?

You will be paired up with an experienced training partner. Our classes are typically structured with a thorough warm up, self-defense techniques, sports Jiu-Jitsu techniques, specific training and a cool down.

Self-defense and sports Jiu-Jitsu techniques are slow with focus on learning the techniques. Training partners should you little to no force so each student learns the movements. Specific training places focuses on the technique learned in class with resistance. This is not a sparing match or "rolling".

To participate in live training (or sparing), students must have achieved at least three-stripes on their white belt. So beginning students will only train the specific techniques taught in the class with resistance and cannot participate in sparing or "rolling".

do i need to know any jiu-jitsu moves before my first class?

No, our curriculum is designed to establish a great fundamental knowledge and base of Jiu-Jitsu. We follow a structured 16-week curriculum that you can jump in to at any time.

How long is a class? Kids classes are 45 minutes, Adults classes are 1 hour.

how many people will i train with?

We will pair you with the appropriate partner based off of size and experience. Typically the higher belt will "pull the line", and be paired with someone who is less experienced in Jiu-Jitsu. You will stick with that partner for the duration of class to practice the techniques with. You will have the opportunity to train with multiple people throughout your learning experience.

I am not as young as I used to be, is it too late for me to start training Jiu-Jitsu?

One of Gracie Barra's mottos is "Jiu-Jitsu for Everyone". This means you can be 4, or 100 years old - it is never too late to start, and you're never too old! Jiu-Jitsu is a sport you can take at your own pace, and proper modifications can be made if necessary.

how often can I train with my membership?

Our minimum requirement for attendance is at least 2x/week to go toward any future promotions, however you are more than welcome to attend as many classes was you want throughout the week that are offered for you age category (Adults, Juniors/Teens, LC1, LC2).

what is the youngest age children can start?

4 years old.
